Organize Pictures
Before you transfer pictures, organize a filing structure so that the pictures can be located again in the future. Click Start, Right Click My Pictures, and click Send To
®Desktop (Create Shortcut) as shown in Figure 3. This will create an icon for My Pictures on your desktop. You can also browse to My Documents and manually open My Pictures.

Once you have access to ‘My Pictures’ create a folder hierarchy to organize the pictures. Here is one suggested way you can organize the pictures.

You'll want to create the following folders under the My Pictures folder:
Edited
Raw
TransferredFromCamera

Figure 3.2 Folders

Under Raw and Edited will be similar folders. These folders will vary according to the type of pictures one enjoys taking. Some suggestions include: Business, Family, Friends, Hobbies, Home, Travel. The Raw folder will also have an extra folder named ToSortMainPictures.

Once you have determined your organizational structure there are three main objectives. You will want access to the pictures so that they can be organized, resized, edited, retouched, renamed and more before shared with others. You also want to make sure that you do not overwrite the raw original pictures when editing them for purposes of showing them off via email, slideshows, websites or other modes of viewing. Finally, you want to save the raw original and raw format files as soon as possible in case the worst case scenario occurs and the pictures are lost.

Figure 3.4. Transferred from Camera to transfer folder on computer.

To begin, first move the pictures to the folders best suited to meet your organizational desires. Open the TransferredFromCamera folder. Keep the window open on the desktop. Next, insert the memory card into the card reader or attach the camera. If you inserted a memory card a window should pop up requesting an action. Click on "Open Folder to View Files" (Do not click "always perform this action."). Once you finally have access to the camera or memory card several folders should be present. If you are unsure which one contains your pictures, open the folders and look for picture files (.jpg, .bmp, .tif). (If a window does not pop up when you insert the memory card - double click on ‘My Computer,’ then double click on the drive that is your card reader.) Now copy and paste the folder containing pictures to the TransferredFromCamera folder. Copy this folder to the: Raw\ToSortMainPictures folder.

It is best to backup the "TransferredFromCamera" folder by burning it to a CD as soon as possible and before you delete the pictures from the digital camera memory cards. This will ensure that you will have a good copy of your pictures, in their original state, on a relatively stable storage item. Continue to sort the pictures as appropriately into the folders.
