Card Readers
The easiest, fastest and most efficient method
of transferring pictures from a digital camera
memory card is to utilize a card reader. A card
reader is an external device that typically
plugs into a USB port and contains slots for
Compact Flash Cards, Secure Digital Cards, and
sometimes more depending on which product you
purchase. One
popular manufacturer of card readers and secure
digital cards is Sandisk
(http://www.sandisk.com).

Windows XP supports card readers. When you plug
the card reader into the USB 2.0 slot,
Windows XP will detect it, automatically install
it, and each slot will show up as a drive
(Removable Disk) in My
Computer.

You can then transfer the pictures into
pre-organized folders (see
Organize Pictures
below) on the hard drive of your computer or
laptop. This can be accomplished much as one
would do if they were transferring items from a
floppy disk or CD to the hard drive. The
transfer process is the easiest part - just copy
the folder on the memory card and paste it to a
pre-setup folder on your hard drive. The most
difficult part of this process is maintaining
some type of organization with the pictures so
that you can find the pictures you want when you
want them as opposed to sorting through hundreds
and sometimes thousands of pictures, and
finally, formatting them appropriately for
distribution on the Internet.
